About Stuart
The small-town ambience of Stuart has been preserved thanks in large part to
a downtown redevelopment plan that incorporated "new urbanism" with
"yesteryear town planning" to create a beach community that is a throwback
to Old Florida. The downtown still retains much of its character, including
its pink sidewalks lined with shops, eateries and theaters. Don't come here
expecting to party all night long, though - most of the town is closed by
ten p.m.
Stuart makes a great base for any eastern Florida vacation. With three
spring training complexes and two jai-alai frontons within a short drive,
sports fans will find this to be an ideal spot. However, most of the
offerings provided by this sleep little town are of the natural sort. The
Florida Oceanographic Coastal Science Center on nearby Hutchinson Island
gives people the opportunity to feed and pet sting rays. Boat tours are
available on the St. Lucie Canal, which was built to carry water away from
Lake Okeechobee in the early part of the 20th century. The Treasure Coast
Wildlife Hospital gives kids an opportunity to see live birds such as the
great horned owl and the bald eagle up close and personal.
