About Port St. Lucie
Located in the middle of the Treasure Coast, the town of Port St. Lucie is
sports heaven. Over a dozen golf courses are located here, as well as the
PGA Village and the PGA Learning Center. The Tradition Field hosts the New
York Mets during spring training, while the minor league St. Lucie Mets play
there the rest of the year. And while America's favorite pastime does
inspire most of the sports fever in this area, those in search of something
more arcane should visit Fort Pierce Jai-Alai, one of the last remaining
Jai-Alai frontons in the state of Florida (or in the United States, for that
matter).
Port St. Lucie's other major draw is ecotourism. The St. Lucie River, one
of the most important waterways in Florida, is also home to a delicate
ecosystem that counts otters and alligators among its residents. Boat tours
ferry tourists along the river, which also includes a rookery of wading
birds at "Bird Island". In addition, in the winter time, the warm waters
around Port St. Lucie become prime manatee spotting grounds, while the sands
along the ocean provide breeding ground for sea turtles. Two wilderness
preserves - the Oxbow Eco-Center and the Savannas Preserve - provide
visitors with another way to get close to the flora and faunt of the area.
Outdoors lovers will find themselves with plenty to do, courtesy of the St.
Lucie River and the Atlantic Ocean. Canoe and kayak rentals are available,
and surf and dive shops are plentiful.
