Port St. Lucie's other major draw is ecotourism. The St. Lucie River, one
of the most important waterways in Florida, is also home to a delicate
ecosystem that counts otters and alligators among its residents. Boat tours
ferry tourists along the river, which also includes a rookery of wading
birds at "Bird Island". In addition, in the winter time, the warm waters
around Port St. Lucie become prime manatee spotting grounds, while the sands
along the ocean provide breeding ground for sea turtles.
