About Port Orange
Tucked between the cities of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach lies Port
Orange, a quiet little beachfront community with outstanding golfing and
water activities. Originally settled after the Civil War and established as
a community for freed slaves, Port Orange and its surrounding areas are
steeped in American history as rich as molasses. Yet Port Orange is not
immune to the delights of quirky history, as the home of Bongoland, a
now-abandoned mid-century theme park with concrete reproductions of
dinosaurs and a miniature train station. Bongoland closed up in the early
50s due to a lack of interest, but its concrete dinosaurs live on in the
Sugar Mill Botanical Garden, where they mingle with a restored sugar mill
among the ancient live oaks, camellias and palm trees. .
Port Orange is also home to one of the top golf courses in central Florida,
the Golf Club at Cypress Head. This challenging course was built in 1992,
and since then has been consistently named one of the best golf courses in
the area by golf authorities like GolfFlorida.com.
